MODUS Feature – Are data centres too demanding on raw materials? 19 Jul 2023

As global demand for data storage continues to grow, more physical spaces to house servers are needed. But a balance between data demand and environmental concerns must be struck.

Scientists at the UK’s Aston University have predicted that in the next three years the total amount of data in the world will increase by 300%. All those WhatsApp messages, undeleted screenshots, thank you emails and more have to be stored somewhere. And that means a physical space must contain this increased capacity, whether co-location or hyperscale data centres. Raw materials involved range from copper, silicon and lithium for the racks of servers, to the aluminiumsteel and concrete of the actual buildings…

In a feature by Helen Parton for RICS Modus, Alex (Alejandra) Soto, studioNWAs Head of Sustainability, explores minimising emissions and how to strike a balance between the drive for sustainability and data centres’ increasing demand for raw materials. Other contributors include, Turner & Townsend  Rider Levett BucknallHDRConcert and Iron Mountain Data Centers.
