Feasibility Studies

The importance of feasibility studies in data centre design

Site selection is an important factor for stakeholders in their decision-making process when undertaking a data centre project.

Architectural feasibility studies allow the analysis of opportunities and constraints of a particular site from a planning perspective, with understanding of site context, environmental factors and layout options, all of which seek to maximise the site potential. The process engages developers with data centre operators to identify key design criteria which enables landowner/developers to market their site to prospective data centre end users with more confidence.

studioNWA expertise

Tapping into their vast data centre design experience, studioNWA can produce feasibility designs and advise clients on development possibilities to show a site’s potential, both in the early stages and through the continuing design process.

In the early-stage feasibility study we can offer:

  • Comparative site layouts
  • Floor plans, building elevations and sections
  • Building massing
  • 3D imaging
  • Feasibility stage design metrics
  • Engagement with stakeholders

Over the years, studioNWA has delivered feasibility studies for multiple site configurations and locations, including the data centre hubs in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, Paris and across the EMEA region. From urban to rural settings, colocation to hyperscale, multi-storey to campus typologies, studioNWA produces baseline designs and optioneering to assist our clients in their decision-making process.

As a project advances beyond the feasibility stage, we will continue to support our client by engagement with Local Planning Authorities, whilst working with Planning Consultants and a wider design team, to produce a comprehensive set of planning drawings and documents for Pre-application submission and Outline or Full Planning Applications, depending on the project and client requirements.
